Edit items on module menu (delete, hide, rename) View

Each item on the module menu can be edited in some way, to delete it (which will also remove all the contents of the section it links to so be careful) rename it or hide it. Dividers and subheaders also have some editing options.

  1. Hover your mouse pointer to the right of the item you want to edit as in the screenshot below.

  2. Click on the downward arrow icon to access a pop-up menu relating specifically to that item (the menu options will differ from item to item). These are top-level functions which will generally include an option to Rename the module menu link, Hide or Show the link to the students, or Delete the item and all of its content altogether.

  3. Exercise caution with this Delete function as it will permanently remove the content as well as the module menu link for that section. It is better just to Hide item from students in case you want to re-use content at a later point, or you mistakenly delete some content that cannot currently be recovered (there is no Undo facility in VITAL).

Add a menu link to an item in the module View

You can create a link from a module menu to a specific section or content item within that module. This might be used for a quick link for students to a module assessment, or to a folder containing important resources, for example.

  1. To add a course link to your module menu, with the Edit Mode ON, hover the mouse pointer over the white cross in the top left of the module menu, as shown here.

  2.  On the pop-up menu that appears, click on the Course Link option.

  3. You will be prompted for a Name for the link and the location of where you want to link to in your module. Click on the Browse button to open a directory of all the sections and items in your module, as shown in the example below. You can open and close sections to find and select an item as you would with Windows Explorer.

  4. If you want it to be immediately accessible to students, check the 'Available to Users' box.

  5. Click 'Submit'. The link will appear at the bottom of your module menu. You can drag and drop this to a different position on the menu.

Add a Web Link to a module menu View
You can add a direct link from the module menu to an external web site, which might be departmental web pages about the degree programme, for instance, or an important online resource for your students.

  1. With the Edit Mode ON, hover the mouse pointer over the white cross in the top left of the menu, as shown here.

  2. On the pop-up menu that appears, select the Web Link option.

  3. You have to give the link a name. You will also need to know the URL (copy and paste the address from the browser address bar) as there is no browse facility here.

  4. If you want it to be immediately accessible to students, check the 'Available to Users' box. Click Submit.
  5. The web link will appear at the bottom of your module menu. You can drag and drop this to a different position on the menu.
  6. The weblink will open in the current window when clicked. You will then need to edit the link on the module menu to make it open in a new window (if you do not complete this step the site will most likely not open for students and they will see a blank page).
  7. Hover the mouse pointer near this link on the module menu and click on the downward arrow icon. From the pop-up menu that appears select the option Set Link to Open in a New Window.
