Add a Blank Page section to a module View

You can add a link to a new, one-Item-only page, which will look like a web page and which you build using the VITAL text editor.

  1. To add a new blank page to your module, with the Edit Mode ON, hover the mouse pointer over the white cross in the top left of the module menu, as shown here.

  2. A pop-up menu appears. Click on the 'Blank Page' link.
  3. On the dialogue that appears, you have to give the page a name, and if you want it to be immediately accessible to students, check the 'Available to Users' box.

     

  4. Click 'Submit'. The new area page appear as a link at the bottom of your module menu. You can drag and drop this to a different position on the menu.

Add a menu link to a VITAL tool (e.g. Discussion Board) View

You can create a direct link from a module menu to a specific VITAL tool, so that your students can quickly access it, if it is a major part of your module, like the Discussion Board or Reading List tool for example.

 

  1. To add a tool link to your module menu, with the Edit Mode ON, hover the mouse pointer over the white cross in the top left of the module menu, as shown here.     

  2.  On the pop-up menu that appears, click on the Tool Link option.

     

  3. You are prompted to give the tool link a Name and to choose one tool from the complete list which appears in a drop down menu.   


  4. If you want it to be immediately accessible to students, check the 'Available to Users' box.

     

  5. Click 'Submit'. The link will appear at the bottom of your module menu. You can drag and drop this to a different position on the menu.


    Add a menu link to an item in the module View

    You can create a link from a module menu to a specific section or content item within that module. This might be used for a quick link for students to a module assessment, or to a folder containing important resources, for example.

     

    1. To add a course link to your module menu, with the Edit Mode ON, hover the mouse pointer over the white cross in the top left of the module menu, as shown here.     

    2.  On the pop-up menu that appears, click on the Course Link option.

       

    3. You will be prompted for a Name for the link and the location of where you want to link to in your module. Click on the Browse button to open a directory of all the sections and items in your module, as shown in the example below. You can open and close sections to find and select an item as you would with Windows Explorer.


    4. If you want it to be immediately accessible to students, check the 'Available to Users' box.

       

    5. Click 'Submit'. The link will appear at the bottom of your module menu. You can drag and drop this to a different position on the menu.


    Build and edit module menu structure (add new content sections, links, etc) View

    All modules in VITAL are set up with a basic structure which you can modify by:

    • adding new sections for content
    • re-ordering the module menu and adding dividers and sub-headers
    • adding links to external sites, items in the module and specific tools (e.g. the discussion board) to the module menu.

     All of these modifications are carried out directly on the module menu (highlighted on the upper image here and enlarged below it).

     


    The enlargement above shows three main aspects of the module menu.

    • Hovering over this white cross (A) reveals a drop down menu of options for creating new sections, dividers, links etc on the module menu.
    • Hovering the mouse pointer by a menu item will reveal a downward arrow icon (B) which when clicked reveals a dropdown menu of editing options for that section.
    • Hovering the mouse pointer by a menu item also reveals a two-way arrow icon (C) which indicate that the item can be dragged and dropped to reorder the module menu.

     

    Modifying the module menu structure is done on a module by module basis. You cannot make templates for re-use. Students will see the module menu exactly as you create it (without the editing functionality). Where there is no content in a section students will not see that link on their view of the menu (empty sections are indicated to you by a grey, dotted-line icon next to the link as shown below.




    You can also choose to hide a menu link and its associated content from students. If a module section is hidden from students you will see the icon below next to the link title.

    Add an announcement to a module View

    The Announcement tool is an electronic notice board that can be used to communicate with students through the ‘What’s New’/’Announcements’ section of a module, and which also sends out notification emails of those announcements to students and staff.

    A basic announcement consists of a title, the announcement text and settings for when to display it to students.

    To create an announcement:

    1. With Edit Mode ‘ON’, on the Announcements page of your module, click the Create Announcement button to start creating a new announcement.



    2. Enter our announcement title and text, set your date and time restrictions if required.

    3. The option ‘Email Announcement’ when selected will send the complete announcement as an email to the University email addresses of everyone enrolled onto the module, even where users have specified not to get notifications of announcements. This email will get sent instantly.
    • NB 1 You cannot use this option with announcements that are set to appear at a future date.
    • NB 2 The email will show as having been sent by you (your email address will appear in the ‘From’ line).
    • NB 3 Course links will not be included in the email.
    If you don't select this option, the announcement is still sent as an email but will go in a queue to be sent a bit later on.

    Online tests in VITAL overview - Creating, running, grading and analysing View

    The Test tool allows you to manage the creation, running, grading and analysis of online tests from a module.

    There are 17 question types which can be deployed in a test (in any combination) and questions can be reused across tests and modules. Sets of questions can be created, from which questions can be randomly added to a test. All question types can contain text, images, links to multimedia and other files to make the question itself. Most question types can include automated feedback for correct and incorrect responses. Overall individual test feedback can additionally be uploaded or directly written via the Grade Centre.

     

    Most question types are automatically marked and tests that consist wholly of automatically graded questions will send test score totals for each student directly to the Grade Centre. Results and test responses can be viewed, marked and downloaded from the Grade Centre. An Item Analysis facility reports on result data, at the overall and individual question level, on discrimination, difficulty, graded attempts, average score, standard deviation and standard error. If problem questions are identified post-test, student grades can be automatically re-graded to reflect this.

     

    Tests can be configured to suit a range of uses from remotely-taken, self-assessment type tests to a summative test taken under controlled laboratory-type conditions. Tests can be configured to allow different student groups more time on the test or that certain settings should not apply to specific students. Test feedback can staged to suit different strategies so that students can be shown: their score; automatic feedback on each question taken; general overall feedback; their response against the correct response. Any of these can be set to be shown at the end of completing a test, at a later point in time or not at all (e.g. correct answers could shown on completing the test and scores could be released at a later date).


    The Test tool is best suited to agile, formative assessments (diagnostic evaluations or student self-assessments for example) where relatively few marks are awarded. There is a substantial risk involved in running high-value, summative tests which students can take remotely (rather than under controlled conditions) as there are no controls over collusion, cheating, ISP service levels, quality of home machines and operating systems etc.
